Masterpiece review: Has its moments here and there
Perhaps as a reply to all those off screen controversies, he repeats the line, 'I do respect women' four or five times in the movie

Mammootty, Unni Mukundan, Poonam Bajwa
What happens when a director becomes a hardcore fan of his hero and has to direct his idol? Well, one of the possible results would be a tribute to the hero, his attributes and his earlier movies. Any doubts, watch Ajai Vasudev’s Masterpiece.
The story is mainly set inside a campus, where two groups, called ‘Real fighters’ and ‘Royal warriors’, are at war against each other. The gangs engage in brutal fights, using hockey sticks and cricket bats.
To spice things up, there is the mandatory sexy teacher (Poonam Bajwa) and to tickle the funny bone, there is a college peon (Santosh Pandit) and a canteen guy (Pashanam Shaji). After a while, the story takes a romantic turn, which then leads to a murder, followed by a suicide.
ACP John Thekkan IPS (Unni Mukundan) investigates the murder and when he can’t solve the case, Bhavani Durga IPS (Varalaxmi Sarathkumar) takes over trying to unveil the mystery behind the deaths.
It is after an hour or so that the new English teacher, Edward Livingstone aka Eddy (Mammootty) joins the college. Needless to add, it’s all about him from then on, be it solving the students’ issues or finding the culprits.
It is pretty clear that Udayakrishna’s script has been used by the director to eulogise his hero.
In all fairness, Mammootty plays his role with dedication, he even played the action sequences like a vibrant youngster. Perhaps as a reply to all those off screen controversies, he repeats the line, “I do respect women” four or five times in the movie. But this is a role that doesn’t offer enough challenge for him as an actor.
Unni Mukundan looks stylish, but maintains a single expression all along. Poonam Bajwa has to look glamorous, while Varalaxmi Sarathkumar is wasted in a rather inconsequential role. The much hyped entry of Santhosh Pandit barely makes an impact. Less said about the sequences with veteran actor Captain Raju the better, as it is not sure if it was meant to be serious or funny.
Masterpiece has its moments here and there and could have been better with some trimming. For the fans of Mammootty, there is enough to cheer about in this one.
Masterpiecce review - Verdict: Masala entertainer.
Reactions from Social Media:
Better second half but overall a useless mass movie. Same old stuff. Once again same pattern movies from Mammootty. Need to forget the fans and should start doing good movies. Its ok to do odd mass movie like Big B2 but this is very sad. #Masterpiece
