Debutant director Venkatesan, a former associate of Venkat Prabhu has debuted with Nalanum Nandhiniyum. It is a fairly decent first attempt as he targets the urban and rural audiences in his commercial plot.

The film up to interval is set in a small town and post interval travels to Chennai ‘Mahanagaram’, as per the story demand. In the first half, it is all establishment as childhood sweethearts and cousins Nalan (Miachel, winner of TV serial Jodi No.1) and Nandhini (Nandita) cement their love, along with comedy (Soori and Rinson) and family dynamics.

Nandhini’s father Arunachalam ( Azhagam Perumal) is not on the best of terms with Nalan’s uncle Duraipandi (Jayaprakash). And when Arunachalam loses in the panchayat elections he blames Duraipandi. Meanwhile the lovers pushed against the wall elope.

In the second half the couple move to Chennai, where their struggles and ordeals are shown in a melodramatic way. Nandhini as a teacher becomes the bread winner, while Nalan aspiring to be a filmmaker wastes his time playing with neighbourhood children. But once Nandhini becomes pregnant, suddenly Nalan turns responsible and chases his dreams and succeeds in becoming a film director!

Nandhita as Nandhini is good and actually holds the film together. Miachel has to improve especially in emotional scenes. Jayaprakash and Azhagam Perumal are adequate, while Soori’s comedy falls flat. Venkat Prabhu does a neat cameo.

The pace of the film is slow, which hampers the narration and makes it look like one long mega-serial. It has some heart-warming moments, but could have been better.

Verdict - Average
