Lingusamy, one of the most successful commercial film directors in Tamil cinema opens up on his new film Paiyya, why he chose Karthi and above all on Nayanthara who was signed up to play the female lead but had to be replaced by Tammannah.
About Paiyya and his choice of Karthi as hero
Lingusamy- It doesn't matter to me if the hero is a young one or an experienced actor. After doing movies with senior actors like Mamootty, and Vikram, I wanted to cast Karthi, who is only one movie old. It doesn't matter to me how big a star my heroes are. In fact, I narrated two stories to Karthi . I let him choose which one he wanted to act in. He chose this one, as he wanted to do an urban love story after doing Paruthiveeran and Aayirathil Oruvan which are in different genre.
I don't have any ill feeling towards Nayanthara. She is my favourite actress. Her career path is fascinating, because she took the reverse gear, starting out with Rajinikanth and then moving out to younger actors like Dhanush. It is not an opportunity everybody gets and she has been successful in that too. I like Nayanthara's style, looks and beauty. I really enjoyed her performance in Yaaradi Nee Mohini
But what went wrong between you and Nayan
We had tried to cut costs for Paiyya and we spoke to her if she could reduce her fee. We had done it in a cultured way by telling her what we had planned. But she reacted differently by telling others that she didn't like it and did not want to be part of the movie. It was only after that that we decided on Tamannaah, who also suits the role. I had never thought of Nayanthara as a glamourous heroine, and never meant to cast her that way. Please do not forget that I was the one who gave Rambha a role to act in a saree," says the director. Besides Tamannaah, Milind Soman and Happy Days actor Sonia Deepti also form part of the Cast.
She is committed and a thorough professional. She signed the film only after hearing the script and her role.
