Now, this one is a wacky film and it is perhaps not everyone's concept of entertainment as well. It is intelligent, mad and treads along in a pattern that has not really been attempted in this format before. But at the same time, this one may be considered as one of the bravest attempts in Malayalam, which is certainly going to be talked about in the years to come.
Of course, there have been several films in the past, which bears some similarity in its narrative pattern. The interactions between a writer and the character created has been a theme for several stories, from the legendary Pygmalion to the recent ones being Woody Allen's 'Midnight in Paris' and Jonathan Dayton - Valerie Faris' 'Ruby Sparks',the old Doordarshan serial 'Phatichar' and even movies in Malayalam like 'Bhargavi Nilayam', 'Ennu Swantham Janakikutty' and 'Nandanam' among many others.
But such comparisons barely matter here and all you want is more efforts like these to happen that will take Malayalam cinema to newer heights. Yes, if you don't connect with its over the top style, you may find it not working for you. But even then, it will turn to be a genuine attempt and you've to give credit for that.
Preman (Fahadh Faasil) is a good for nothing caretaker of a posh apartment complex. He is often ridiculed by the residents there, especially by a fiery young girl named Prabha Thomas (Kamalini Mukherji). His only friend is his colleague there, an senior caretaker played by Mukundan, who influences Preman's thoughts in a big way.
The demure Preman just can't retaliate even to the worst insults and the writer in him decides to seek revenge in a novel way, by creating a character named Narendran (Fahadh Faasil again), who is suave, arrogant and brave. Now the twists and turns of how the lives of the characters go ahead is being decided by Preman's pen.
No two ways about it, this movie is not for all. But then, that is exactly what happens when you go for experiments. Of course the film is far from perfect and ends pretty abruptly. There are areas that would have been even more wonderful with some fine-tuning for sure.
Sankar Ramakrishnan has written a fascinating script with smartly crafted dialogues and is easily one of the boldest attempts during recent years. V K Prakash has shown his brilliance as a filmmaker and has packaged the film, with his signature. Arun James' visuals are superb but the songs are fine, at best.
But then the star of the show is Fahadh Faasil, who has been surprising all with his brilliant performances that seem to improve with every film. He plays the introverted Preman to perfection and then gets into Narendran's costly shoes in a remarkable way. With his lucid style and originality, he is simply a treat to watch.
The rest of the performances support the film no less. Mukundan, Kamalini Mukherji, Aiswarya, Rima Kallingal and Chinnu Kuruvilla have done their parts in an impressive manner.
Natholi Oru Cheriya Meenalla is witty and hooks you straight into the narrative with its inherent charm. It's not at all like what you have seen in Malayalam before and it is imperative to applaud the sincerity of the makers. Don't miss this one, if you have an eye for the unconventional.
