Director V K Prakash's Netholi Oru Cheriya Meenalla, which releases today, is a tribute to the yesteryear hit Manjil Virinja Pookkal, directed by Fazil and released in 1980.
The two characters played by Fahadh Faasil in Netholi… are called Prem Krishnan and Narendran. Kamalini Mukherji's character is called Prabha. All these were names of the characters played by Shankar, Mohanlal and Poornima in the earlier film. In fact, Manjil Virinja Pookkal's anti hero was instrumental in the launch of a new star, Mohanlal.

Fahadh says that more than an emotional attachment to this fact, which could be there as the 1980 film was directed by his father, the concept complements the new film.
There have been rumours that Netholi… is a new version of Prakash's earlier movie, Freaky Chakra. But it has been clarified that though there were plans to adopt some portions of the film, later it was dropped.
