Is there a need for some compulsory retirement age in the world of films as well?

Without any disregard for all his contributions during his heydays, this is the only feeling that we have while watching writer-director Balachandra Menon’s latest offering, Njan Samvidhanam Cheyyum.

No point in mincing words, this one is hopelessly absurd.

The story begins when a bank officer (Gayathri) narrates her latest concern. A statutory warning for those faint hearts amongst you: Please ask for some assistance before you hear this.

Her daughter Pinky (Dakshina) wants to direct a film!

What can the mother do in such a grave situation? The poor woman’s husband Krishnadas (Balachandra Menon) is employed in NFDC and he is always busy. They have barely spent enough time together.

You start cringing as the lady start seducing her husband, who is busy being in his own world. As the mom and daughter start wondering what has happened to him, he announces: He wants to direct a film!

For all those who are wondering why on earth should they be so worried about someone directing a film, here is the possible answer.

It would have happened in Balachandra Menon’s life, if some of those who had positive regards for him read this script before he made this rubbish film. Then they would have been seriously worried for him and not to mention, about us, the hapless viewers too.

The film goes on and on for 160 minutes, during which Krishnadas’s film comes out and after hours of discussions, issues and confusions, the state film award jury gives all the major awards to his film!

If this film really needs a review, it is to pick which is the worst contribution in this film’s making.

Let’s not even talk about the film’s script, if there was one. The visuals are fine but the music is irritating mostly.

With a funny wig and his archaic style Balachandra Menon bores you to death. Gayathri looks good but hams it up in a big way. Dakshina fails to make any impression whatsoever.

The real “surprise” of the film should be the producer of this film. How can someone spend so much money for this kind of stupidity?

Njan Samvidhanam Cheyyum actually makes you sad. What else do you feel when a filmmaker who has made some nice films in the past decides to make a fool of himself? It’s a bad dream that refuses to leave you, how much you try to!

Verdict: Torture
