Onam is the major festival of Malayalees all over the world. And for all top heroes, an Onam release is a prestigious project. It is normally the only time of the year when superstar films clash with each other.
For theatres all over Kerala, Onam is as exciting as the cine goer. From eight to ten films that used to release every year during this season, the number has come down to three or four. However, this season's two biggies are Naran and Nerariyan CBI.
2005 Onam season was kickstarted with Dileep's Chanthupottu released on August 26, Mohanlal's Naran released on Sep 3) and Mammootty's Nerariyan CBI released on Sep 8. Kalabhavan Mani's Lokanathan IAS is scheduled for release on Thiru Onam day (Sep 15).
Today all superstars have an understanding with each other that their films will not release on the same day as audience get divided and they lose out on the all-important opening weekend collections that matter the most.
The Onam special film based programmes dished out on 10 odd satellite channels are a threat to cinema. Still an Onam release has its own charm and for every Malayalee after the traditional Onam 'sadya', a visit to the nearby theatre to watch the latest release is a must.
