The advent of multiplexes has created a new market for Oscar nominated films in Chennai. Ang Lee’s Life of Pi which led the tally with four Oscars has grossed an incredible Rs 91 Cr from India, out of which Rs 7.25 Cr came from Tamil Nadu.
Life of Pi’s major chunk nearly 90% of total TN collections have come in from Chennai city and suburbs located in Chengalpet district. The huge success of a class film proves that Oscar films if they are marketed well have a potential.
Similarly Argo and last week’s release Silver Lining Playbook has got good collections in Chennai multiplexes. A film being nominated and getting an Oscar enhances box-office value, which was not the case earlier. Today’s audiences thanks to net penetration and growth of social media are keen to see good cinema.
A few years back the Chennai market used to shun Oscar nominated or winning films, as they had no market. Many Hollywood classics have not got a theatrical release in Chennai. But with the advent of multiplexes and smaller screens, Hollywood classics have found a new market in Chennai and suburbs.
All the winners at the 2013 Oscars like Argo, Life of Pi, Lincoln, Les Miserables, Silver Lining Playbook and Zero Dark Thirty have been screened in Chennai before the Oscar night. Django Unchained and Amour are the only films yet to release in India.
