Shekhar Kapur continues to make news! It's being said in hushed tones that Shekhar has dropped the idea of making PAANI, a futuristic film set in Mumbai 20 years from now, when scarcity of water would lead to wars between those who have it and those who don't.
At the IIFA Awards in Singapore earlier this year, Shekhar and producer Barrie Osborne [THE LORD OF THE RINGS trilogy] had announced the alliance [the film will be made in Hindi and English languages simultaneously], but rumours are rife that the film has been put on the backburner.
“Not at all, that's not true,” the world-acclaimed director of ELIZABETH informs me, “It's definitely going to be made. We are still working on the script. There're no deadlines [of commencing the filming] that I need to adhere to.”
Shekhar is still vacillating whom to cast in the principal role. “At a point of time, casting Shah Rukh or Hrithik in a million dollar project that's aimed at the global audience didn't seem feasible. But times are changing now. The market is opening up rapidly,” he states.
Has he confirmed the cast of the film? “Not yet! There are names that cross my mind at regular intervals. But I haven't taken a decision yet,” he clarifies, putting all rumours to rest that he has signed Hrithik for the film.
However, the rumour mills are agog with the speculation that both SRK and Aamir have been penciled in for the lead character.
Shekhar continues to keep a track on Bollywood, whether in London or L.A. “Indiafm is my link to Hindi cinema. I log on to the site religiously,” he smiles, “Of course, it's pretty difficult for me to catch up on so many films, but I do make it a point to watch films that interest me… I must add, Hindi cinema has truly evolved in recent times.”
Shekhar also denies that he's shelved the project with Vishal Bharadwaj, titled MANTRA. “Vishal is busy with another film at the moment. Once he's through with that, he'll start work on MANTRA,” he adds.
