Cast: GV Prakash Kumar,Sri Divya,Urvashi,VTV Ganesh
Music: GV Prakash Kumar
Lyrics: Thamarai,Arunraja Kamaraj,GV Prakash
Direction: Mani Nagaraj

Pencil, which is touted to be GV Prakash Kumar’s second acting venture, is helmed by debutant Mani Nagaraj. Fresh from the success of ‘Darling’, GV takes care of the music reins along with playing the lead role in ‘Pencil’. Let us see how the album has turned out:
Why Machi Why
Singers: Tippu,Srihari
‘Why Machi Why’ is a typical college fun track laced with lyrics targeted at the youth. The entire track is rhythm based accompanied by light instruments instead of the heavy ones one would associate with a track like this. The first interlude has got to be the best portion of the track while the remaining portions are not catchy enough to keep us hooked.

Yaarai Polum
Singers: GV Prakash Kumar
‘Yaarai Polum’ follows a ‘Bryan Adams-esque’ structure accompanied by pulsating background arrangements. GV who has rendered the vocals has sung it exceedingly well especially in the high pitched portions. The rendition sounds huskier than his usual ones and kudos to the composer for trying out a rock track.

Singers: Shreya Ghoshal,Javed Ali
Easily, the album’s best track by a countrymile! ‘Kangalile’ shows us why GV is such a class act when it comes to melodies. Shreya Ghoshal nails this track with her soulful rendition while the humming portions take the cake.Listen to this!

LED Kannala
Singers: Hariharasudhan,Maalavika Sundar
The ‘kuthu’ ritual! ‘LED Kannala’ has all the ingredients of a typical mainstream kuthu track. The tune is jaded and is saved by the lead vocals of Hariharasudhan & Maalavika. The arrangements are percussion based like every other kuthu track.Might get better with the visuals.

Yaarai Polum (EDM Remix)
Singer: GV Prakash Kumar
The aforementioned ‘Yaarai Polum’ track gets a remix version in the album. This remix adds a tinge of dubstep and heavy dosage of contemporary EDM mix to the original version. Catered to the clubs & discos!

On the whole, ‘Pencil’ is not an engaging album on the lines of ‘Darling’ & is likely to work when viewed along with the visuals.

Picks from the album: Kangalile,Yaarai Polum
Album Verdict: Pencil doesn’t work like Darling!
Album Rating: 2.5/5
