Simbudevan directed Imsai Arasan 23 am Pulikesi produced by Shankar took the best ever opening for a Tamil film this year. It is a historical opening, as the film had Vadivelu in the lead with no big names in the cast. The trade feels that it was an opening similar to an Vijay or Vikram film.

In two days (Sat and Sun) Pulikesi grossed more than what Pattiyal or Puthupettai did in its three day opening. At Chennai’s Devi, tickets till Wednesday (July 13) are sold out. At Abhirami, Kamala and Agasthya it took 100 percent opening.

On East coast road Pulikesi drew huge crowds at Thyagaraja in Tiruvanmayur and Prarthana. At Mayajaal multiplex at Rs 150 per ticket, there were 7 housefull shows on Sunday! And in Madurai, Vadivelu’s home town the film opened in four huge screens to full capacity. In a smaller centre like Theni the film has become a rage as they are simply loving the dimwit king Pulikesi and his ways of punishment and administration. In Coimbatore’s three screens, they faced tremendous pressure to accommodate the crowds.

Pulikesi had opened with 135 prints all over Tamilnadu and now an additional 25 prints will be added this week to ease the pressure. No historical film has taken such a gargantuan opening like Pulikesi. The film is already declared a super hit.
