After Madurai and Tirunelveli, it looks like filmmakers have started exploring Thanjavur district. Debut director Usha Krishnan has tried to give a clean family entertainer with traces of Chinna Thambi Periya Thambi and Aan Paavam in Raja Manthiri, which deals about the comic conflict between brothers set against a Thanjavur backdrop.

Surya (Kaali Venkat) a meek guy runs a goli soda business and his biggest worry in life is marriage as it gets postponed due other factors. There is Suriya’s younger brother the aggressive go-getter Karthi (Kalaiyarasan) who has completed class XII and is waiting for his college admission. The duo constantly bicker at home that younger one often make fun of his elder brother and his inability in getting a girl.

When a young girl (Vaishali) moves to the opposite house of Surya, he develops a liking for her but again his brother Karthi comes as a villain. Luckily Surya sketches a plan and sends Karthi to the city for higher education, where he falls in love with his classmate (Shalin). But during vacation, Karthi creates a big scene and puts a full stop to his brother’s love.

To Karthi’s surprise, his parents find a suitable bride for Surya and it turns out to be his college sweetheart (Shalin). The rest of the film tells us how the two brothers bury their ego to win the hearts of their dear ones.

Throughout the movie, there is no double meaning dialogues nor vulgar moments, all credits go to debutante Usha Krishnan. Having said that, Raja Manthiri isn’t a great entertainer either and it rightly falls under the average category with occasional laugh and few genuine comic moments with twists and turns.

As usual Kaali Venkat has done a decent job in Raja Manthiri while Kalaiyarasan proves his comic timing, especially in the romantic portions. Two newcomers Shalin and Vaishali are just okay whereas the technical department too has not contributed much to elevate the film.

To conclude, Raja Manthiri is an average entertainer and people, who watch village comedies, might find this as a decent watch.
