Rajinikanth and Kamal Haasan, came together to promote the Bharathiraja classic 16 Vayathinile (1977), where they shared screen space. They were present at the trailer launch of the digitally restored film at Kamala theatre.
16 Vayathinile is a landmark debut film of Bharathiraja and starred Kamal Haasan, Rajinikanth and Sridevi with music composed by Ilaiyaraja. Kamal Haasan was paid Rs 27,000 while Rajinikanth promised Rs 5000 was paid only Rs 2500 for the film.
The stars went down the memory lane and turned nostalgic at the event. Rajinikanth said : “At that time Kamal was the fastest rising star and during the shoot nobody would talk to me. The producer Rajakannu made it at a cost of Rs 5 lakhs, then a princely amount. Nobody was there to buy the film which he released it himself and turned out to be a super hit. “
Kamal Haasan said : “ During the making everybody said that it was an experimental film and it would flop. And we did not have money to hire a slow motion camera to shoot slow motion scenes. “ Kamal also said that his friendship with Rajinikanth has survived despite several people trying to drive a wedge between the two.
The digitally restored 16 Vayithinile would be released worldwide by Kalaipuli S Thanu by theend of October.
