It was an end of an era with the passing away of the evergreen romantic hero Dev Anand.
The two top Tamil heroes Rajinikanth and Kamal Haasan who knew him personally were in grief.
In a condolence message Rajinikanth said: “Devanandji, we had the proud privilege of shaking your hand and getting your blessing and giving you a hug as we humbly offered ‘The Legend’ award to you two years ago in Chennai. All of us who were part of that evening are so moved today. We salute your zest for life and your spirited energy for work. You will always stay in our hearts.”
Kamal Haasan conducted a press conference and spoke about one of the legends who shaped Indian cinema in the 1950s and 60s. Kamal says he started watching Hindi films after he became a fan of two people Dev Anand and Amitabh Bachchan. The two Dev Saab films he was impressed with were Jewel Thief and Tere Mere Sapne.
Kamal Haasan speaking on Dev Anand said: “I would say, Dev Saab passed away in his youth. He was very active all through his life; it would be difficult to say that he was old. Dev Anandji has proved that the only retirement for a star is death”.
The best compliment that Kamal got from Dev Anand was when he offered him a lead role in a Hindi film which he was to produce and direct much before Ek Duje Ke Liye happened.
