Film actress-turned-politician Ramya (Divya Spandana) of the Congress has suffered a defeat in the Parliamentary polls as she failed to retain her Mandya segment.

The Janata Dal (Secular) candidate C S Puttaraju defeated Ramya by a margin of over 4,000 votes. While Puttaraju secured 516,650 votes, Ramya got 512,310 votes.

Last year, Ramya had won the by-poll from Mandya against Puttaraju. But within a year, the tables have turned and according to political observers Ramya is to blame herself for the defeat.

The actress was accused of neglecting local Congress leaders and party workers. Rebellion within the district unit of the Congress was at an all-time high during the campaigning. The actress, who anticipated defeat, had disappeared to London for a holiday.

It is to be seen now whether Ramya will return to the world of glitz and glamour. Three of her Kannada movies are pending release.
