Divya Spandana: Destiny's damsel

Sandalwood Queen Ramya (Divya Spandana), who suffered a personal setback following the death of her foster father R T Narayan, is busy campaigning for the by-election to the Mandya Parliamentary segment as the Congress candidate.

Ramya hit the campaign trail earlier this week reluctantly. According to reliable sources, she was keen on withdrawing from the fray, but the Congress leaders convinced her to contest the polls, as it was her foster father’s dream to see her in the Parliament.

Kannada film stars, led by M H Ambarish, who is now a minister in the K Siddaramaiah-led Congress government in Karnataka, have camped in Mandya district. They are keen that Ramya wins the by-polls, as Siddaramaiah wants to prove a point by demolishing the Janata Dal (Secular) citadel.

In the recently concluded Assembly elections, the Congress could manage only one seat out of the total seven seats in Mandya district.

That one seat – Mandya city – was won by Amabrish, who hails from the same district. Ramya also hails from Mandya district and she belongs to the Vokkaliga community, the second largest in the state. The Congress is banking on Vokkaliga votes as Mandya district is dominated by that community.

The actress joined the Congress a few years ago and is backed by former minister D K Shivakumar. It will be a major challenge for Ramya to connect with the people though the sympathy wave is in her favor. Unlike Ambarish, she has not visited the district often but has campaigned for Congress in the past.
