After years of speculation, Sandalwood Queen Ramya (Divya Spandana) has taken the political plunge by filing her nomination papers for the by-election to the Mandya Parliamentary segment as the Congress candidate on Saturday.
Chief Minister K Siddaramaiah was present in Mandya when Ramya filed her nomination papers. The Congress is using Ramya as the trump card because Mandya district is considered the citadel of the Janata Dal (Secular), led by the former PM H D Deve Gowda.
In the recently concluded Assembly elections, the Congress could manage only one seat out of the total seven seats in Mandya district. That one seat – Mandya city – was won by veteran star Amabrish, who hails from the district. Ramya also hails from the same district and she belongs to the Vokkaliga community, the second largest in the state.
Mandya district is dominated by Vokkaligas and Congress finds her as an ideal candidate to take the JD(S) candidate in his own backyard.
Ramya had joined the Congress a few years ago and is backed by former minister D K Shivakumar. She is also distantly related to the former Union minister S M Krishna. However, it will be a major challenge for Ramya to connect with the people. Unlike Ambarish, she has not visited the district regularly and that could be a hurdle for the actress.
The entire Sandalwood is expected to extend support to Ramya and campaign for her in the election, which is scheduled for August 21.
