The release dates of Tamil movies are going for a toss in July and movies are either advancing or delaying their release all of a sudden. The major reason is due to non-availability of censor officials to watch films and certify them.
Films like Dhanush's Velai Illa Pattadhari, Jayam Ravi's Boologam and few other films are waiting for censors to watch the film and get certification. Nearly 48 members' terms were over on June 30. Most of these censor members were appointed by the previous Congress regime.
The censor board chief in Chennai has told producers that "due to shortage of certifying members, the process of censoring new films has slowed down". Earlier the CBFC in Chennai were censoring 5 to 7 films a week , which has now come down to 1 or 2 a week!
Meanwhile films which got censored are taking advantage. Thirrupathi Brothers' Sathuranga Vettai which was going to release on July 25 got its release date advanced to July 18. Earlier, Escape Artists had blocked many theatres for Dhanush's Velai Illa Pattadhari(yet to be censored) which was scheduled to release the same day!
And on Wednesday night, Aascar movies made a surprise announcement that their Jai-Nazriya romantic musical Thirumanam Ennum Nikkaah will release on July 24th Thursday.
Remember the Ramzan weekend (July 25 to 28) is packed with Karthik Subbaraj's Siddharth-Lakshmi Menon Jigarthanda (UA) and Karthi's Madras, CV Kumar's Sarabham and Vijay Antony's Salim, which are yet to be censored.
The buzz is that Studio Green might postpone the release of Madras by a month to August end. With hardly any screens available for multiple releases on the same weekend, the producers are scrambling to adjust their release dates in the last minute to avoid clashes.
