THE BASICS: S Durga, directed the Sanal Kumar Sasidharan, was originally called Sexy Durga. The film has won the Hivos Tiger award at the Rotterdam Film Festival and the Golden Apricot at the Yerevan International Film Festival. The film has been featured at several other prestigious film festivals in India and abroad.

It’s the happenings that a couple, Durga (Rajshri Deshpande) and Kabeer (Kannan Nair), face during a fateful night. There is another story that is being narrated at the backdrop of the Garudan Thookkam ritual.

Sanal Kumar Sasidharan is one of the most notable young filmmakers who has made award winning movies like Oraalppokkam and Ozhivudivasathe Kali. His next film is titled Unmadiyude Maranam.

It is alleged that at the behest of the Union ministry, S Durga and Marathi film Nude were removed from the list of Indian Panorama section of the International Film Festival of India (IFFI), currently underway at Goa. The resignation of the jury members underlined this. Sanal approached Kerala High Court and the court directed that the film is to be shown at IFFI. But it has not happened yet. Sanal has reached Goa and has told sify.com during a chat that he is still not aware about what IFFI plans to do next.

Sanal has withdrawn S Durga from the forthcoming International Film Festival of Kerala (IFFK) as well and conducted a screening of the film at Thiruvananthapuram. It was alleged that he withdrew the film as it wasn’t included in the International competition but Sanal denies this. He says the film was withdrawn in protest against the attitude of the academy by placing it in the Malayalam Cinema Today category, which is meant to promote contemporary Malayalam cinema that needs support.
