Three Cheers to Patnaik, it goes without saying that he is the life and soul of Seenu Vasanthi Lakshmi. As the blind singer he brings laughter, tears and a lump in one?s throat. The film is a remake of the Malayalam hit Vasanthiyum Lakshmiyum Pinne Njanum and K.Srinivas has been faithful to the original story.

The story is set in a beautiful location, with mountains, green pastures, rivers and a small hut by the riverside. This is Seenu?s (Patnaik) house, where he lives with his father (Nutan Prasad), mother, and lovely sister Vasanthi (Priya). Seenu is born blind, but has a very good voice. He looks after his family, by singing on the roadsides and streets. His neighbour and lover is Lakshmi (Navneeth) who is a dumb girl. The village landlord Appala Naidu (Prakash Raj) comes back from Delhi with his close friend and Central Minister?s son (Rahul) and his wife for a holiday. Appala Naidu is like a God for the whole village and especially for Seenu and family, as Seenu?s mother is the domestic help in the bungalow.

Naidu helps Seenu to meet a doctor, who promises that he can get back his sight once he gets a donor and the money for the operation. Naidu promises money for the operation when Lakshmi decides to donate one of her eye (out of ignorance that eye cannot be transplanted from a living person) to Seenu. Naidu and the minister?s son call the girls over to the bungalow and rape them. But the two girls are unable to tell anything out, as they fear that Seenu?s operation might not take place. The two girls try to forget everything that happened to them for the sake of Seenu, when once again Naidu starts blackmails them to come to the bungalow. Not knowing the dark side of Naidu, Seenu worships him and fixes his sister?s marriage. Will Seenu know the truth?

Director E.Srinivas has faithfully adapted the original version and he has given us a stunning climax with a finesse not seen in usual Telugu cinema. Patnaik has given an extraordinarily detailed performance after doing a lot of homework. The actor has worked hard, moving one to tears, with his facial expression and body language. All the supporting cast including newcomers Priya, Navneeth and Nutan Prasad are good. The melodies tuned by Patnaik are another highlight of the film. On the whole, an emotionally powerful movie.

Verdict: Good
