But for martial arts, Akshay Kumar may never have become the popular star he is today. And in a TV series by the National Geographic channel, he will be back to this great love of his life.
"Seven Deadly Arts With Akshay Kumar" is a thrilling seven-part martial arts series that will be aired every Sunday at 8 p.m. starting May 9.
Akshay will take viewers on a spectacular journey through the world of seven deadly martial arts.
"I want to create awareness about these arts among Indians. You can discover your inner self through martial arts, and everything I am today is because of martial arts," says Akshay.
"I started doing martial arts when I was in Class 8, and am still doing it today," he adds.
In his teens, Akshay shifted to Bangkok to study martial arts where he mastered karate and muay thai. He returned to Mumbai to teach martial arts until the world of modelling and films came calling.
But even today, he does not drink or smoke. He is focused, disciplined and credits these qualities to his training in the art of karate.
A Bollywood superstar, he is known for his thrilling stunts and energetic dances in his films.
It is his dream to open a school of karate in Mumbai that will impart the art in its correct form.
"I approached the government to start a martial arts school but as we need a huge place like they have in Bangkok, we have been unable to find a suitable sponsor for the project," says Akshay.
In "The Seven Deadly Arts" series, he will seek to share his personal philosophy of martial arts with viewers and how it has helped him become a better actor, fighter and human being.
