It is well known that Nayanthara’s new horror thriller film has been titled as Airaa. In an exclusive chat with Sify, the film’s director Sarjun said: “Airaa is the short form of Airavata, the white elephant of Hindu God Indra. Airavata is actually called as the King of Elephants. The reason why we opted for the title is that one of the two roles of Nayanthara in the film has the qualities of Airavata.”

“Both KJR Studios’ Rajesh and Nayanthara liked my short film Maa and they asked whether I have a horror script. As my writer Priyanka and I had long back framed a horror thriller script with a unique concept, we pitched the idea and they readily agreed,” he added.

For the first time, Nayanthara plays a dual role in Airaa. “Actually, she was quite excited when I told that she has dual roles in the film. For a particular look in the film, Nayanthara is taking a lot of efforts. Her involvement in any project begins from the script level and she considers each female-centric projects as her own film,” said Sarjun who raves about the way Nayanthara balances mainstream films and fresh heroine-oriented films. “Movies like Kolamaavu Kokila and Imaikkaa Nodigal are not easy to do. At the same, Nayanthara is also balancing commercial films like Viswasam,” added the director.

Sarjun says that though Yogi Babu plays a brief role in Airaa, the film is not a horror comedy. “Airaa will be a proper horror thriller. Though Nayanthara has done Maya before, this one will be unique,” said Sarjun who also strongly said that unlike his debut film Echarikkai, Airaa is an original script and it is not inspired by any other foreign language films.

Airaa also has Kalaiyarasan and Jayaprakash playing pivotal characters. “We have mostly shot the film in Chennai and currently camping in Pollachi. Our producers are planning for Christmas release and the entire team is working hard to complete the film on time,” signed off Sarjun.
