Rarely do we see actors debuting with a blockbuster in Tamil cinema! Right when Suriya established himself as a big star at the box office, his brother Karthi forayed into Tamil cinema with the blockbuster Paruthiveeran and continued the momentum in films like Ayirathil Oruvan, Paiyaa, Naan Mahan Alla and Siruthai.
Though Karthi projected him as a stylish hero in Paiyaa and middle-class Chennai boy in Naan Mahan Alla, people loved his performance as the local guy in Paruthiveeran, Ayirathil Oruvan, and Siruthai. While Suriya is known for meticulous work and perfection, Karthi scores with his effortless screen presence.
After Siruthai, Karthi lost path with back to back failures including Saguni, Alex Pandian and All in All Azhagu Raja. It was Madras which gained back the performer image to Karthi and the actor hit a six with his rural mass action entertainer Komban.
Post Komban, Karthi’s Thozha, Kaashmora and Kaatru Veliyidai didn’t set the box office on fire but the actor continued to experiment with different genres. Just like Madras, Theeran Adhigaaram Ondru helped Karthi to gain back the momentum. With Theeran Adhigaaram Ondru, Karthi earned a lot of respect for his thirst for quality films and it generated the right expectations for his rural family entertainer ‘Kadai Kutty Singam’.
As said earlier, people love to see Karthi as the boy next door, especially in films which are set in the village backdrop. In Karthi’s career, Paruthiveeran, Siruthai, Komban and Kadai Kutty Singam are the four big hits. Among these four films, Karthi played as the man of the soil in three films and it clearly says what people expect from the actor.
Trade pundits say that Kadai Kutty Singam is indeed one of the biggest blockbusters in recent times. To be honest, Kadai Kutty Singam crossed the Tamil Nadu gross of Suriya’s Thaana Serndha Koottam, the Karthi starrer is the second highest grosser in Tamil Nadu for the year 2018 (until July) after Superstar Rajinikanth’s Kaala.
Kadai Kutty Singam worked big time at the Tamil Nadu box office because it delivered the right message and provided a movie watching experience which family audiences expected from the Tamil filmmakers. Kadai Kutty Singam actually helped Karthi to re-establish his star power, thanks to the tremendous performance of the film at the box office. The film has crossed the 40cr gross mark in Tamil Nadu and still holding well in major theaters on the weekends.
If we look at Karthi’s career, he has the penchant for attempting something different within the commercial format. Though Kaashmora was a flop, he bravely said ‘yes’ to the period horror genre and his performance was appreciated by the critics. Another biggest advantage for Karthi is his decent market in Andhra and Telangana.
Karthi’s next film ‘Dev’ with Rakul Preet Singh and newcomer Rajath is said to be a stylish romantic entertainer on the lines of the actor’s super hit ‘Paiyaa’.
We at Sify wish Karthi to score another blockbuster with Dev, keep entertaining us with your quality flicks!
