Student of the Year trailer: Flashy, predictable and a little boring

It's out! Karan Johar's fifth directorial. And it's everything we thought it would be - making it very, very disappointing.

In a nutshell, it's a mash-up. Uproot Kuch Kuch Hota Hain from the '90s and plant it in 2012, give it a spritz of Mohabbatein and a splash of the Triwizard Tournament from Harry Potter, and you have Student of the Year.

KJo's favourite themes have been repeated: the three friends (this time, it's two boys and a girl) making up the love triangle, the latest fashion that colours every shot, the OTT high school facilities that make our jaws drop, and the 'stiff' competition between friends that's meant to rouse our passions.

Sadly, so far, it's only made us yawn.

The trailer introduces us to Sidharth Malhotra (Abhimanyu), Alia Bhatt (Shanaya) and Varun Dhawan (Rohan). Best friends with perfect bodies and great chemistry, they have everything going for them, until the principal of Dehradun's St Teresa's High School (Rishi Kapoor) announces the Student of the Year competition.

In this contest that includes everything from academics to sport to dance, friends turn enemies and best friends turn competitors.

However, as far as we can see, there is not much to keep us engaged. The songs aren't foot-tapping and the lines are cheesy.

Well, maybe the basketball won't disappoint!

Throw in a few dance sequences that remind us of Bole Chudiyan and You Are My Soniya, and we are struggling to find the enthusiasm to go to the cinemas when the film finally does release.

But don't take our word for it. Watch the trailer and judge for yourself!
