Moondru Per Moondru Kathal

It is summer time and the mercury is shooting up at the Kollywood box-office.  There are no big star movies, but nearly a dozen medium and small budget films are going to hit the screen in the next 10 days.

Friday April 26 will have four releases- Oruvar Meedhu Iruvar Saindhu, Pechiakka Marumagan, Naan Raajavage Pogirean and Yaarada Mahesh.

Among the lot Naan Raajavage Pogirean (NRP) released by VLS Cinemedia has got decent promotions. It’s a fun movie with Nakul, Chandini and Avini in the lead with music by GV Prakash and directed by Prithviraj Rajkumar.

The other April 26 release which is being talked about is  Yaaruda Mahesh a romantic comedy film directed by Madhan Kumar, starring Sundeep Kishan and Dimple. The film had become popular in the preview circuit and is touted as the next NKPK.

But the real battle is on International Labour Day – May 1. As of now four films - Ethir Neechal, Moondru Per Monndru Kathal, Soodhu Kavvum and Nagaraja Chozhan MA, MLA are planning a May 1 release, to cash in on the long Labour Day weekend and peak summer season.

Dhanush produced Sivakarthikeyan- Priya Anand starrer Ethir Neechal with peppy music by Anirudh has got a good hype about it. Vendhar Movies has taken the rights from Wunderbar at a very high price. Added to that Sivakarthikeyan is a riding a wave with a series of hits.

There is also a good buzz about Vasanth’s eagerly awaited romantic film Moondru Per Moondru Kathal (MPMK).  MPMK produced by Mahendra Talkies stars Arjun, Cheran, Vimal, Bhanu and Surveen, and Vasanth’s son Ritvik debuts in a song. The music of Yuvan Shankar Raja,is already a rage.

The other Labour Day release which has been making waves is Thirukumaran Entertainments Soodhu Kavvum distributed by Studio Green. The film is directed by debutant Nalan Kumarasamy featuring Vijay Sethupathi and Sanchita Shetty is a comedy thriller.  Sathyaraj’s Manivannan directed Nagaraja Chozhan MA, MLA is also releasing on May 1.

There is acute shortage of screens as 8 films within a span of five days are difficult to accommodate.  All films will eat into each other’s collections and business will be divided. It is better that the trade rethink the release jam and come to some sort of agreement and avoid competition.
