Swarnamalya, the anchor who shot to fame with the programme “Ilamai Puthumai” on Sun TV was in the news after her marriage and subsequent return from US, where she had settled with her husband. She proclaimed that she was interested to try her hand at films if good offers came her way and went on do the role of Vijaykanth’s sister in Engal Anna.
But her career in tinsel-town never took off and the offers dried up except for the occasional sister roles which she refused. Now the big news is that she has joined the strip-tease bandwagon with a glamourous role in Sorry Enakku Kalyanam Ayiduchu.
So what is big about it? All Mumbai models and other aspiring actresses do strip tease and make it to the top or do item numbers for survival in Tamil films. But Swarnamalya during her prime had refused to do glamour roles with young heroes. She had done only Alaipayuthe in which her role as Shalini’s sister was appreciated.
Swarnamalya has a typical girl-next-door image especially after Alaipayuthe and Suhasini’s serial Snehithiye. But in her new ‘avataar’ she is one of the heroines in the film opposite a little known actor like Sreeman. The publicity stills are shocking as it looks like a skin-flick to be directed by a newcomer Sagar.
The moral of the story is that when the going gets tough in Kollywood, even actresses who swear by their family girl image are forced to strip for survival.
