It looks like the proposed DTH screening of Vishwaroopam on DTH, has stirred a hornets nest among theatre groups across the country. If Vishwaroopam has a DTH release, theatrical release looks bleak at the moment.

The Tamil Nadu Theatre Association (TNTA) the most powerful theatre association in the state has come out against DTH.  At its meeting in Chennai on Friday TNTA decided to boycott all films having a DTH premier on television.

The association also welcomed the move by Abirami Ramanathan led Chennai city theatre federation who have also refused to screen films which first premier on DTH. The cable operators in TN are also opposed to DTH screening as it will have an adverse effect on their business.

It was a joint meeting between TNTA and the powerful distributors association, Tamil Nadu Distributors Federation (TNDF) which has made it difficult for Kamal Haasan’s Vishwaroopam to get a theatrical release.

Kamal’s plan to release the Hindi version Vishwaroop in theatres in North India has run into trouble with multiplex giant PVR objecting to Vishwaroopam Tamil being screened on DTH. They feel if the Tamil version is shown on DTH it will open the market for Hindi films in future.
