Tirumalai has been touted as Vijay’s comeback vehicle. In the film Thirumalai (Vijay) is a happy-go-lucky mechanic. The movie is shot to exploit Vijay’s larger-than-life image. And his arch foe is Manoj K.Jayan, a local businessman who tries to subvert the law. Jyothika plays his ladylove who is obsessed with him. The coming together of Vijay and Jyothika after the mega success of Kushi is the highlight of the film.

The movie revolves around Thirumalai and how he fights against the rich, powerful and influential people in the society. The film also has Raghuvaran, playing Vijay's brother and Kausalya, who acted opposite Vijay in Nerukku Ner, playing the role of his aunt!

Vivek and Karunas are roped in to provide the comedy track and Kiran makes a special appearance in an item song with Vijay. A huge set resembling Pudupet area with mechanical shops was erected at Saligramam and the major portion of the movie was shot there.

Vidyasagar’s music is peppy and a couple of songs have been shot abroad. Rathnavelu is the cinematographer and stunts are by Peter Hyen. Pushpa Kandasamy of Kavithalaya Productions has produced this film and she hopes it will be a bigger hit than their earlier film Saamy. Thirumalai is directed by debutante Ramana.
