Yugi Sethu of Nayyandi Darbar has catapulted to fame with Panchatanthiram. The character of Vedantham among the five friends in the film has been noticed and people are queuing up to sign him. But the dimwit of Panchatanthiram is in no hurry and hates to be typecast as a comedian. He has signed one film Ramana with Vijaykanth where he plays the character with the image of an intelligent comedian (which he is).
Yugi is a funny name but he himself coined the name after a character in the Sanskrit play Vasavadatta. Yugi is a gold medallist from The Adyar Film Institute and is today a visiting professor there whose favourite topic is cinema. He had produced, acted and directed two feature films in Tamil about ten years back. It was the telefilm Jana on Doordarshan which gave him a big break. The telefilm was telecast 27 times and he has even acted in an Italian telefilm Pidgin.
But it was the talk show Nayyandi Darbar first on Vijay TV and later on Jaya TV that made him a household name. The programme had excellent TRP and was the flagship of Vijay TV. The noted director K.Balachandar has remarked “Yugi is the most casual actor I have ever seen”. He has completed nearly 600 episodes of this popular late night talk show and has temporarily discontinued it as he is now concentrating on movies.
Kamalhassan was so impressed by Yugi’s take off on the Jay Leno show that he offered him a role in Tenali, which the anchorman refused. Finally he succumbed to Kamal’s persuasion and accepted the role of Vedantham Iyer in Panchatanthiram. A recent online poll verdict was that Yugi was the next popular actor in the film after the legend.
