Malayalam cinema has been thriving on the revenue from the ‘satellite rights’ for sometime now. For all those who are wondering what satellite rights are, it is the amount that is given by TV channels to the producers, when they buy the rights to telecast the films.
Most of the films made during recent years have received the whole making costs from selling the satellite rights alone. Incidentally that is the reason why many directors have suddenly decided to become producers as well, eyeing this money!
Quite recently the group of TV channels decided not to buy the rights for a certain period of time, as the producers have reportedly been demanding for more money. And this has virtually affected the film industry in a big way. The small budget films have been hit the most and there are quite a number of films, which are at various stages of completion that has been waiting for a decision on this.
The film chamber has now decided to give a strong reply to the TV channels. It has been requested to the various film organisations not to participate in channel discussions, interviews or the shows organized by TV channels until this issue is resolved.
