Two Tamil films — Mannar Vagaiyara starring Vemal and Maduraveeran featuring Vijayakanth’s son Shanmugapandian in the lead have backed out of the Pongal battle. Until last Friday, the promotional posters of the film had the tag ‘Pongal release’ but from today, the caption has been changed to ‘January release’ and 'Coming soon'.
Sources say that leading distributors and theater owners have given preference only to three films — Suriya’s Thaanaa Serndha Koottam, Vikram’s Sketch and Prabhu Deva’s Gulaebaghavali for Pongal. Both Mannar Vagaiyara and Maduraveeran couldn’t even get 50 decent screens each for Pongal so they have wisely decided to postpone their release dates.
Trade has allotted the screens for Thaanaa Serndha Koottam, Sketch and Gulaebaghavali based on the expectations. The Suriya starrer has got the maximum number of screens among three. However, if Sketch and Gulaebaghavali get positive reviews, theater owners have agreed to increase the screen count.
All the three films are slated to release on January 12.
