When it comes to Vishal Bhardwaj’s work, expectations are rocket high whether it’s the characterization, music, story, screenplay or direction. But when the marketing demons take an upper-hand with creativity the result is Matru ki Bijlee ka Mandola.

Matru ki Bijlee ka Mandola has a story that is one of the most relevant topics in the era of urbanization. It features some of the most talented actors - Pankaj Kapur and Shabana Aazmiand and a very beautiful music score. But it lacks the pace, the fire which you can feel in Maqbool, Omkara or Kaminey. Reasons could be Marketing gimmicks, the desire for to join the 100-crore club that forces creative directors to compromise on quality.

For instance Imran Khan despite one of his best performances till date, is not the apt choice for a Haryanvi Jat role. And Anushka Sharma played the same tomboy kinda role she has for the past couple of films. She is on the verge of losing her career if she will not come out of her ‘Meenakumari Complex'. Apart from Pankaj, Shabana and Gulabo (the pink buffao), the characterization of other characters seems incomplete.

So what's good about Matru ki bijlee ka Mandola? Pankaj Kapoor and Shabana Azmi’s Superb Performance. Pankaj is the main hero of the movie and he is the main pillar of the movie. Shabana is excellent as a corrupt minister. Gulabo as the pink buffalo makes an excellent debut and is much better as supporting cast than the popular faces. And of course, the background score and music by Vishal Bhardwaj.

I believe if the director had attempted to keep things more original without any marketing tadka, the beauty of the supremely good script would come out more.
