Mohanlal, Jagathy, Lakshmi Gopalaswamy, Jagadhish

Our heart goes out to Mohanlal, one of the finest actors in the country who is being wasted in insipid films these days. His latest Vamanapuram Bus Route is yet another disappointing fare. It is another attempt by the actor to re-create the magic that worked in Balettan that was a clean family entertainer. The director of the film, Sonu Sisupal has to go back to his guru and learn the basics of filmmaking before he attempts to make his next film.

The story is set in Vamanapuram village where a Panchayat President Gopalan Nair(Jagathy Sreekumar) is desperately trying to bring a bus service for the benefit of the people. But he has a group of enemies in opposition leader (Janardhanan) and gang. Nair has vested interest in bringing the bus service as he is waiting for the sanction from PWD for roads of Vamanapuram to be tarred, by which he can swindle a few lakhs! But all his plans go haywire as his detractors see to it that a bus route never comes to the village. Nair brings ?Lever? Johnny (Mohanlal) a tough nut Kili and man who gets things done for bus owners all over Kerala! The rest of the story is how Johhny comes to Vamanapuram, helps Nair in his mission and goes back with his only daughter Meenakshi (Lakshmi Gopalaswamy)!!!

There is not one redeeming factor in this slipshod enterprise except that Mohanlal is introduced as a crazy MGR fan who dresses, sings songs and fights like the legend. He not only looks bloated but all his expressions are nothing but an extension of his past films. The actor seems to have lost interest in his work and has to choose his scripts with far more care in future. Script writers Sudhish and John have no story to tell and every single character like Panchayat President, opposition leader, barber and others look like a bunch of cartoons that we have seen in a dozen village based films in the past.

The song tuned by the director fails to impress and so is the camera of Sanjeev Shankar that has failed to etch the beauty of villages in Kerala. On the whole Vamanapuram Bus Route, due to lack of shock absorbers, is a painful experience.

Verdict: Dissappointing
