Varathan review: Entertaining and relevant
Fahadh Faasil comes up with another terrific performance in Varathan which is a beautiful portrayal of a relationship

Fahadh Faasil, Aiswarya Lekshmi
Director Amal Neerad’s Varathan is about a couple who comes to stay at their remote ancestral home in a high range town in Idukki, when things are not really happening for them in Dubai.
Abin (Fahadh Faasil) is an IT professional going through turbulent times in his career. He is living with his wife Priya (Aiswarya Lekshmi) in a Dubai apartment. At a particular point in life, they decide to shift their base to their homeland.
Back in Kerala, Abin feels like an outsider, as the title suggests. He is a really sweet guy, who tries to find positives in every person and the couple is madly in love with each other. Priya supports him as he plans to launch his start up.
They start living in an old house owned by Priya’s late dad, in a high range town. There are a few to help them there, but things don’t really happen the way they would have liked.
The story moves ahead with those tensions and how it affects their relationship as well, with affecting scenes and well written dialogues.
There is a certain pace with which Amal has narrated the story and makes it easy for the viewer to go along with the journey with delicious frames by Littil Swayamp and superb music by Sushin Shyam.
As Abin, who keeps his emotions mostly to himself, Fahadh Faasil comes up with another terrific performance. It is difficult to take our eyes away from him whenever he is on screen, as he gets in to the skin of the character so convincingly. Aiswarya Lekshmi looks beautiful and does a highly impressive performance, as Priya. Also watch out for some top notch performances from Sharafudheen, who has been presented in a totally different avatar from what we have seen until now, Nisthar Sait, Dileesh Pothen and Arjun Asokan.
Varathan narrates a rather simple plot in a thoroughly engaging way. It’s a beautiful portrayal of a relationship and then, deals with some highly pertinent issues that we come across in the society around us. Go for it!
