Anil Kumar K G
Vineeth Kumar, Jacob Gregory, Samskruthy Shenoy
There have been quite a number of films in Malayalam, especially during recent times, which are more concerned about the pattern of the narrative than on its plot or script. The multi linear style that is still happening with limited success is an example.
But it is the format adopted by Alphonse Putharen?s hit film Neram (which was influenced by Quentin Tarantino or films like ?Run Lola Run?) that has inspired director Anil Kumar K G?s to come up with Vegam.
Now, in all fairness, it would have been good if this concept were original. But no such luck with ?Vegam? and the film ends up as a bargain basement version of a number of films of this kind.
Sidhu (Vineeth Kumar) and David (Jacob Gregory) are close friends with modest earnings. In their efforts to make some fast bucks, the two land up in big trouble. With fast cuts that go forwards and backwards often, this plot moves along on highly predictable lines.
Then there are some other characters, whose stories get connected to the main plot. Pratap Pothen is a businessman, whose daughter is getting married soon, Samskruthy Shenoy is Vineeth Kumar?s love interest, Shammi Thilakan is a gangster and Jojo is a cop.
Why did the makers of this film decide to christen this one with the title 'Vegam', which sounds so close to 'Neram', its obvious inspiration? Maybe they wanted to make their intentions clear or they could have been plain lazy. That sort of a lethargic attitude is seen all along and the film tends to become too slow, even though the duration is only about 110 minutes. One of the best things about the film is its music by Govind Menon.
Vineeth Kumar looks good and convincing, but with a shaky script he can?t do enough to salvage the film. Jacob Gregory is good as well. The heroine Samkruthy Shenoy, however, doesn?t impress much. The rest of the cast, especially Jojo and Pratap Pothen, are good.
Vegam can be a watchable fare for those who haven?t seen films of this genre. For the rest of the world, it could be a rather ordinary outing at best. Now, decide on your own.
