He is better known for his remakes with younger brother Ravi. And now Velayudham releasing for Diwali, is not only his first straight Tamil film but also with an actor outside the family. In this exclusive chat, Raja speaks to sify.com about the film and working with Ilayathalapathy Vijay
What is Velayudham all about?
The film is a mass entertainer. It is about a milkman who turns into a vigilante. It’s a complete package with a human interest story at heart.
How was it directing Vijay in a mass film, which is a first for you?
Vijay is very sincere. Mass is inbuilt in his body itself! He knows exactly what to do to carry the film. It’s a big budget film; the biggest even in his career. So I knew my responsibility. I have kept the mass element in mind but made a sensible film with a logical narration.
Velayudham- A sify special
They say there are traces of Telugu Nagarjuna starrer Azad in this film. Please comment.
Yes, there is a small knot of it. But the story and screenplay is written by me. It’s more as a tribute to my late good friend, Thirupathy Samy whom I had worked with on the Azaad script before he died.
You usually do remakes so how did this film come about and that too with a big star like Vijay?
Vijay called me up one day and asked if I would only work with my brother and not others. I was very surprised and touched. It started like that. And later one thing led to another and soon we were making
the film together!
Tell us about the two heroines.
Genelia is a good friend as we have worked together earlier. She has a crucial role here. Hansika too has an important and glamorous role, which will be one of the highlights of the film.
What are the special scenes in the film?
There is a train fight which is not done even in Bollywood before. I needed one lakh people for the climax in the Cochin stadium and we have managed to do that. The film is going to be a huge Diwali treat!
