Veteran actor Sukumari (73) passed away today at a private hospital in Chennai, following cardiac arrest.
Sukumari was admitted to hospital after suffering from severe burn caused while she was lighting lamp in her pooja room. She had undergone plastic surgery and treatment but passed away following a heart attack.

Three days back,Tamil Nadu chief minister Jayalalithaa, who shares a special bond with Sukumari had paid a visit to the hospital, met the actress and her team of doctors .
Sukumari, born in 1938, started her acting career from the age of 10 and has done more than 2500 films.
Sukumari is a first cousin of the Travancore Sisters, Lalitha, Padmini and Ragini. She was awarded the Padma shri by the Government in 2003 and was awarded the National Film awards for Best supporting Actress in Namma Graamam in 2011.
She was married to late director A. Bhimsingh and has a son Dr Suresh.
She is the favourite screen mother and has played alongside many superstars in all south Indian languages.
