Director Jis Joy’s Vijay Superum Pournamiyum is a remake of the Telugu hit Pelli Choopulu, which had Vijay Deverakonda and Ritu Varma in the lead roles.

This Malayalam version begins showing the childhood days of both the hero and the heroine and soon after moves to the main plot.

Vijay (Asif Ali) idolizes ‘Superman’, which explains his name in the title, and is an engineer. He is a youth with no big plans about life and spends most of his time fooling around with his two friends, who are struggling musicians. Pournami aka Pinky (Aiswarya Lekshmi), has done her MBA and has failed in some business attempts.

Vijay decides to get married owing to pressure from his parents and his family reaches Pinky’s house, as part of their marriage proposal. But as fate would have it, they get locked inside a room for nearly an hour, which gives the two enough time to know about each other.

There are some twists that happen thereafter, but then, we all know where the story is heading to. In all fairness, it’s an okay ride with some laughs, some emotions, too many dialogues and enough melodrama with long sermons. This one is a predictable tale, which ends up as a watchable fare if you are ready to accept it without thinking much.

Asif Ali has to play a careless youth who is not really responsible and someone not capable of taking decisions on his own for most part of the story. He does a decent job in the end. Aiswarya Lekshmi is impressive as a girl who is pretty much sure about what she wants from life. Balu Varghese and debutant Joseph Annamkutty Jose have limited chances to tickle the funny bone.

If you haven’t watched the original, Vijay Superum Pournamiyum could be a fine drama, which has its fine moments. Give it a try.
