Kamal Haasan’s ambitious Rs 90 Crore film Vishwaroopam will be shown on all major DTH platforms on  Thursday , January 10 at 9.30pm. The 2 hour 29 minutes film is likely to be shown without commercial breaks by DTH providers – Airtel, Tata Sky, Dish TV, Sun Direct, Videocon and Reliance Digital TV.

It will be a one-time DTH premiere and will pay per view priced at Rs 1000 for Tamil and Rs 500 for Hindi version. Kamal Haasan has made it clear that piracy will not be an issue as the DTH operators can easily track down the home address of the pirate because films flash a unique code generated by the set top box.

Kamal has the backing of all top industry groups like Director’s Union and Tamil Film Producers Council. Coimbatore’s leading exhibitor and distributor Tiruppur Subramaniyam is making all the theatre bookings for him.

However there is strong opposition to Kamal’s move by R Paneerselvam, General Secretary of Tamil Nadu Theatre Owners Association (TNTOA) and also from Abirami Ramanathan who controls Chennai city theatres. A ‘Maanadu’ (big state level meeting) of TNTOA is going to take place in Truchy on January 3 to discuss the issue.

Kamal has claimed he has signed 400 plus screens in Tamil Nadu, but TNTOA say none of their members have signed up so far. A very interesting battle is ahead in Tamil Nadu between DTH supporters and those fiercely opposed to it.
