It is now confirmed that Kamal Haasan’s ambitious Rs 90 Crore Vishwaroopam which was to be premiered on DTH, will now first release in cinema theatres.
A combination of dull DTH premiere response and stiff opposition from theatre owners and distributors have torpedoed the DTH plans.
Airtel DTH’s Shashi Arora who had kickstarted the idea in a press statement said: “In line with the postponement of the release date of the movie Vishwaroopam across theatres and DTH platform by Rajkamal Films, we have stopped booking for the movie premiere that was scheduled for January 10 at 9.30 p.m.”
Tata Sky another major DTH player says : " The producer of the movie has chosen to postpone the release and hence the event airing on Tata Sky also stands postponed". None of the DTH operators were willing to reveal the amount of booking for the DTH premiere.
Meanwhile as reported earlier Kamal Haasan had been meeting Tamil Nadu Theatre Owners Association (TNTOA) members and trying to sort out the DTH issue. Late on Tuesday evening Kamal met Abirami Ramnathan, Paneerselvam and other big guns of TNTOA and assured them there will be no DTH premier.
As of now Vishwaroopam theatrical release has been postponed to January 25. TNTOA will cooperate and give maximum screens provided there is no DTH premiere. R Pannerselvam, general secretary of TNTOA said: “We are having a joint meeting of the Federation which will include theatre owners and distributors on Wednesday and we will take a final call after that. The day and date of Vishwaroopam will be decided at the meeting.”
A lot of confusion still remains about the deal between Kamal Haasan and TNTOA. Kamal is asking for a solo release in 450 plus screens in Tamil Nadu on January 25 and is insisting on one show on DTH platform four days after its theatrical release. TNTOA wants him to show it on DTH only after a minimum five weeks after theatrical release.
