The DTH operators have started the biggest ever campaign to popularise Kamal Haasan’s  Vishwaroopam DTH premiere on January 10 @ 9.30pm. The film is getting huge hype as DTH operators are promoting it through a big print and television campaign.

There is a huge buzz and as per a spokesperson of a DTH operator – “The booking for the premiere is good and will pick up more towards the telecast day. Kamal Haasan is a pathbreaker and the entire Indian film industry is keeping a close watch on Vishwaroopam DTH premiere, which will open an all new revenue stream for the producers.”

Meanwhile Tamil Nadu Theatre Owners Association (TNTOA) and Tamil Nadu Film Distributors Federation (TNFDF) are opposed to the DTH screening. At a big joint meeting in Tiruchi on January 3 they have passed a resolution not to screen and distribute movies if they are released on the Direct-to-Home platform.

TNTOA president RM Annamalai said they were ready for talks with Kamal before the release of ‘Vishwaroopam’ on DTH platform. And once it is premiered on DTH, they will not be coming forward for any talks, clearly hinting they will not screen the film.

Annamalai said: “What Kamal Haasan is doing is like kicking the ladder after climbing up. He attained star status only after his movies were screened in cinemas all these years”. TNTOA general secretary Paneerselvam wanted Viswaroopam in DTH only after three months of its theatrical release.

At the same time Devi Cineplex, one of Chennai’s better maintained theatre complex has come out strongly in support of Kamal Haasan. Devi’s prestigious big screen has been given to Vishwaroopam. Today (Jan 4) Devi Cineplex has issued an ad saying “Vishwaroopam is releasing shortly”. Devi has been traditionally screening all Kamal biggies from the 1980’s and theatre management has good relationship with the star.

And in Coimbatore Vishwaroopam has come out with an ad listing 32 theatres mainly controlled by Tiruppur Subramaniyam. Remember Subramaniyam was there at Kamal’s press meet when he announced his DTH plans.

After these theatres announced screening of Kamal starrer, TNTOA has said that they will not cooperate with cinema theatres that screen Viswaroopam. The coming week is going to be crucial as Kamal Haasan and TNTOA lock horns.
