The incident unfolded as one passenger, identified as Rahul Raj from Patna in Bihar, boarded BEST's double-decker bus going from Andheri to Kurla (route 332) at Saki Naka.
After refusing to pay for the fare, he tied the hands of one of the two conductors with a chain he was carrying with him. He later whipped his revolver and told the passengers that he would not harm them, but he had come to the metropolis to kill MNS chief Raj Thackeray. At that time, there were 25 passengers aboard the double decker
In the commotion that followed, he fired six rounds in the air. Even as he was holding the passengers to ransom, one of the conductors managed to disembark from the bus and alerted the police.
When the bus halted at Bhail Bazar near Kurla, a police team entered the bus and asked the revolver-wielding man to surrender. He refused, prompting the police to open fire at him. Rahul Raj sustained severe bullet wounds and died before he was admitted to the Rajawadi Hospital at Ghatkopar.
One passenger was also injured in the firing and has been admitted to the Rajwadi Hospital. All other passengers are safe.
The police said the youngster might have been mentally deranged.
