14 prison guards taken hostage in Peru

Lima, Nov 15 (IANS) Fourteen prison guards were taken hostage by inmates in a penitentiary in Peru, police said Wednesday.

The incident took place late Tuesday when the guards at the Challapalca prison were on a strike to demand higher wages, Xinhua reported.

Police and troops surrounded the maximum-security prison to prevent prisoners from escaping.
