16 dead, 60 injured as bus plunges into Udhampur gorge

At least 16 people were killed and 60 others were injured after an overloaded bus carrying a wedding party skidded off the road and plunged into a 300-feet deep gorge in Dudu area of Jammu and Kashmir's Udhampur District late on Saturday.

Fifteen of the injured are said to be in critical condition.

Police said the bus was on way to Basantgarh from Marothi village when it fell into the gorge while negotiating a turn at about 4:30 p.m.

Preliminary reports said that around 75 persons were on the bus at the time of the mishap.

The 187 battalion of the Central Reserve Police Force and the local police are involved in the rescue operation.

The injured have been admitted to Latti hospital, from where more than 15 have been referred to Government Medical College Hospital, Jammu.

State Governor N.N. Vohra and Chief Minister Omar Abdullah have expressed grief over the loss of lives in the accident.

In a message, the Governor conveyed his sincere sympathy to the bereaved families and prayed for eternal peace to the departed souls.

The Chief Minister has directed the district administration to ensure the best possible treatment for the injured. (ANI)
