New Delhi, Dec 11 (IANS) A total of 17,324 kg of drugs were seized till October this year along India's borders with Bangladesh, Pakistan, Nepal, Bhutan and Myanmar, parliament was told Tuesday.

Minister of State for Home M. Ramachandran told the Lok Sabha that the highest seizures were reported along the borders with Nepal (8,548 kg) as well as Myanmar (5,588 kg).

Another 2,863 kg of drugs were seized on the India-Bangladesh border, 273 kg on the Pakistan border and 52 kg on the Bhutan border, he said.

The minister said in a written statement that the seized drugs were deposited with the Narcotics Control Bureau, state police and customs authorities for disposal.

He said the government had adopted a multi-pronged approach to curb the drug menace.

These included round-the-clock patrolling on the borders, establishing observation posts, erecting border fence, using hi-tech surveillance equipment and upgrading the intelligence set up.
