New Delhi: The Supreme Court on Tuesday rejected Congress leader Sajjan Kumar's plea to quash charges against him in connection with a 1984 anti-Sikh riots case.

On July 22, the Delhi High Court had issued a notice to Kumar over an appeal filed by the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) that challenged the Congress leader's acquittal in the case.

Challenging his acquittal, the CBI had earlier moved the High Court.

A division bench comprising of justices G S Sistani and G P Mittal directed Kumar to file his response to the petition.

Giving relief to Kumar, a special CBI court on Apr 30 acquitted him of all charges in a case connected with the 1984 anti-Sikh riots.

The riots erupted in Delhi and elsewhere following the assassination of then Prime Minister Indira Gandhi on October 31, 1984.

Kumar and others were also charged for the offence of spreading enmity between two communities.
