20 Indian nationals undergoing prison sentence in Sri Lanka, who were cleared for repatriation, have been sent back to India under the provisions of the India-Sri Lanka bilateral agreement on the transfer of sentenced persons.

One of the sentenced Indian nationals was in a Sri Lankan jail for the last 25 years and the rest were undergoing sentences ranging from five to ten years.

The India-Sri Lanka bilateral Agreement on the transfer of sentenced persons, which was signed in June 2010, provides for the transferred persons to complete the remainder of their terms in Indian jails.

Eleven prisoners still remain in jails in the neighbouring country. Their papers have, however, been sent for clearance to respective state governments in India. (ANI)
