Andhra Pradesh Member of Parliament Asaduddin Owaisi was on Monday placed in judicial custody after surrendering before a court in connection with a 2005 case that had filed against him by Patancheru Police for abusing the then Medak district collector.
His brother Akbaruddin Owaisi is also an accused in the case, and is also under investigation for a hate speech that he delivered last month.
According to Patancheru Police, the Owaisi brothers and other MLAs had protested against the then Medak collector Anil Kumar Singhal during road-widening works at Mutangi village on April 16, 2005. They obstructed officials from carrying out their duties, alleging that it was a place of worship that was being damaged.
The Owaisi brothers had surrendered in court in 2009, and got bail. However, they had failed to appear before the court for the next hearings, the police said.
The case booked against them was under Sections 147 (punishment for rioting) 153 A (promoting enmity between groups), 353 (assault on public servant obstructing him of discharging duties), 290 (punishment for public nuisance), 295 (deliberate acts to outrage religious feelings) and 506 (criminal intimidation) among others.
