36 Indians among 39 killed in Nepal mishap

Kathmandu, July 15 (IBNS) At least 39 people, including 36 Indians, were killed in a bus mishap in Nepal's Nawalparasi region, officials said on Sunday.

The mishap took place when the bus, with mostly pilgrims from India´s Uttar Pradesh, fell in a canal in the afternoon.

While rescue operations continued till late in the evening, police confirmed that 36 of the dead are Indians.

The bus fell in Gandak canal in Nawalparasi district near Nepal-India border. The scene of the tragedy is about 150 km west of Kathmandu, the capital of Nepal.

While some people still missing, the toll could rise further, police said.

Besides police, local people also assisted in the rescue operation.

According news in Nepal media, the Indian embassy in Kathmandu has also sent an assistance team to the accident site.

"The authorities of Indian districts adjoining the border have also rushed to the spot. The Seema Suraksha Bal (SSB) contingent deployed on the nearest border has also been mobilised to provide required assistance," said press release issued by the embassy.
