The number of infant deaths in Kolkata's BC Roy Hospital touched 36 in the last five days, reports said on Saturday.
State medical officials have rejected any kind of negligence at the hospital to be the reason behind the deaths.
"We cannot prevent deaths in all cases. We will try our best," Dr Tridib Banerjee, Chairman of the Health Department´s Special Task Force, was quoted as saying by NDTV.
"But I have personally supervised this programme and there is not a single case of negligence," Banerjee said.
Denying medical negligence, hospital authorities said ´terminally-ill patients´ were referred from other hospitals, who eventually died there.
